Umbilical cord blood stem cell banking

Stem cell banking is much talked about thes days at the time of birth of a new life. When I heard about it, without a second thought I decided to go for it for my new born baby. The baby's umbilical cord, which is usually cut at the time of delivery and discarded - is a rich source of Stem Cells. Stem Cells are the building blocks of our body. They have the unique ability to regenerate/ reproduce into over 200 types of tissues. Hence these stored cells can be used to fight against some 75 odd life threatning diseases which might attack the baby. These cells can be stored for around 21 years. Also its believed that not only the baby,..also the baby's siblings and anyone in the family whose blood matches with the baby can use the stored stem cells in case when required.I think this is a precious gift which we can give to our new born.
